It is important to keep your car well tuned because an improperly tuned car does not run as efficiently as you expect. Besides fuel economy, you also need to consider that good tuning means less wear and tear of the engine and tyres. You can cut down on your fuel and maintenance costs by keeping your car in best condition.
Doing your own maintenance
Some of the simpler tasks related to maintenance can be done in your garage or driveway. There is no need to go to a service station or spend money on these. For example, changing the oil and filters is quite easy and anyone can do it. Cycling through tyres is equally easy.
• Changing the oil
To check the condition of the oil you simply raise the hood and take out the dip stick. This will show you the level of oil in your vehicle. Check the owner's manual you received with your car to make sure you fill it up with the right grade oil. The manual will also tell you after how many miles you need to change the filter.
• Other fluids
You can do the same with other replaceable items like coolant, differential or transmission, and brake fluid.
• Spark Plugs
If your car is an older model then it probably needs more frequent spark plug changes. Check the manual to make sure what the right timing is; probably in terms of how many miles between spark plug changes.
• Air filters
Air filters can either be cleaned or they can be totally replaced. It is a good idea to check on them periodically because a dirty air filter can impede the flow of air into the engine. Dirty air filters can also lead to a lack of fuel efficiency.
Plan your route based on tasks
If you live in a location that involves heavy traffic every time you go shopping then make a list and plan your route accordingly. Take into account different weather conditions, congestion spots, terrain, and so on.
Check your vehicles efficiency range
Every vehicle is designed to have a certain optimum driving speed based on engine horse power, weight, and other similar factors. In a majority of the cases, vehicles run best when they are driven between 30-40 miles per hour. So try not to drive too fast because beyond certain speeds too much fuel is used at high speeds. If you are on the expressway then try to stay below 55 miles per hour. You should also use cruise control on longer routes to keep your speed even.
Keep the tyres inflated
Maintaining proper tyre pressure is important to enhance the life of your tyres and ensuring a smoother driving experience for you and an easier time for your vehicle engine and chassis.
Use less air conditioning and cold starts
To reduce fuel consumption and also to reduce engine work load use the air conditioner sparingly. On days with good weather you should drive with the windows rolled down. The same applies to making frequent trips. A cold engine consumes a lot more fuel. So try to walk on good days.
Stick to the servicing schedule
Make a note of the schedule in the service booklet and make sure you get the servicing done. This will minimise repair requirements and keep your vehicle in good shape.
Car maintenance is a key to long life of the engine and car eventually. So, never ignore it and try not to delay your car’s periodic servicing to keep in best of its health.
